It's sunset on a Tuesday and members of L.A.'s biggest moped gang, the Latebirds, have gathered at Choke, a Silver Lake shop, for their weekly ride. They lean against their motorized steeds -- Tomos, Puchs, Motobecanes and Peugeots -- on the sidewalk, brooding, smoking and shooting the breeze, looking cooler than Bob Dylan and his Triumph Bonneville. They are artists, would-be novelists, bike messengers, stylists, a mortician and the intermittently employed; twenty- and thirtysomethings for whom riding and restoring vintage 1970s mopeds has become a lifestyle. Some call them "dirt wizards," but their casual-yet-carefully wrought aesthetic -- raw skinny denim, Vans and mucho plaid -- betrays undeniable hipster leanings.

They're joined by members of other, more recently formed gangs, the LA Tigers, the Woolly Bullies and the HalfWits. Cruising through the hills and canyons of Los Angeles County, 15 to 50 of them at a time, they fall just short of magnificent, thanks to the tinny, high-pitched "waaaa" of their 50cc engines -- a migraine-inducing whine that's less "Easy Rider" than it is "angry chain saw."

"You can't take someone on a moped that seriously," says Steve Acevedo, a member of the LA Tigers. "And we don't take ourselves that seriously. That's the whole point -- it's all about having fun."

It must have been amazing for settlers heading west to arrive in Death Valley and see such unbelievable land scape. Summer months are brutal. Winter months are crystal clear, but cold. There are several ghost towns around from miners who moved on. I am going there between Christmas and New Years. Should be great!

I was talking to someone recently about their bike trip along the West Coast. They started in Los Angeles and rode north up Highway 1 all the way up to Vancouver Island, Canada. What a great way to see the West Coast. I think I will start planning the same trip. See the sand dunes in Oregon and take a ferry over to Vancouver Island.

Lemgo, Germany founded in the year 1190, was located at the crossroads of two important trade routes. During the middle ages this town became the most important town in the Lipper Land region.

When the thirty year war occured it caused a great set back in the advancement of the town. During the 19th century Lemgo once again was able to prosper.

Lemgo survived World war II with very little structural damage. Therefore, most of the old building dating back to the 1500's still survive.

A wonderful place to visit if you plan to travel through Northern Germany.

Arctic Ice melts open Northwest Passage

The really tragic thing about the arctic ice melt... Some people view it as a positive because it opens up trade routes and shortens traveling time by sea. although for years many scientists and activists have argued the loss of sea life and impact it causes on our environment is detrimental to our lives. It seems to fall on deaf ears. Nonetheless an interesting read, see below this interesting article from the Associated Press.

"PARIS - Arctic ice has shrunk to the lowest level on record, new satellite images show, raising the possibility that the Northwest Passage that eluded famous explorers will become an open shipping lane.

The European Space Agency said nearly 200 satellite photos this month taken together showed an ice-free passage along northern Canada, Alaska and Greenland, and ice retreating to its lowest level since such images were first taken in 1978.

The waters are exposing unexplored resources, and vessels could trim thousands of miles from Europe to Asia by bypassing the Panama Canal. The seasonal ebb and flow of ice levels has already opened up a slim summer window for ships.

Leif Toudal Pedersen, of the Danish National Space Center, said that Arctic ice has shrunk to some 1 million square miles. The previous low was 1.5 million square miles, in 2005.

"The strong reduction in just one year certainly raises flags that the ice (in summer) may disappear much sooner than expected," Pedersen said in an ESA statement posted on its Web site Friday.

Pedersen said the extreme retreat this year suggested the passage could fully open sooner than expected — but ESA did not say when that might be. Efforts to contact ESA officials in Paris and Noordwik, the Netherlands, were unsuccessful Saturday.

A U.N. panel on climate change has predicted that polar regions could be virtually free of ice by the summer of 2070 because of rising temperatures and sea ice decline, ESA noted.

Russia, Norway, Denmark, Canada and the United States are among countries in a race to secure rights to the Arctic that heated up last month when Russia sent two small submarines to plant its national flag under the North Pole. A U.S. study has suggested as much as 25 percent of the world's undiscovered oil and gas could be hidden in the area.

Environmentalists fear increased maritime traffic and efforts to tap natural resources in the area could one day lead to oil spills and harm regional wildlife.

Until now, the passage has been expected to remain closed even during reduced ice cover by multiyear ice pack — sea ice that remains through one or more summers, ESA said.

Researcher Claes Ragner of Norway's Fridtjof Nansen Institute, which works on Arctic environmental and political issues, said for now, the new opening has only symbolic meaning for the future of sea transport."

Urban legend or truth?

Here is an urban legend that has been passed on to me ..."Two guys go to Australia. After drinking up a storm, they hopped into their rented car and were driving on deserted roads when they accidentally hit a large kangaroo. Getting out of the car, they realized that the kangaroo had died in the accident.

Being so drunk, though, they propped up the kangaroo, its lifeless head bouncing from one side to the other, dressed it in one of their jackets, and took pictures of themselves with their arms around it.

After a few minutes of picture taking, the guys were shocked when it seemed that the kangaroo came back to life. It turns out that the poor kangaroo wasn't dead, but it had been briefly knocked unconscious, and when it came back to consciousness started to box with the drunken guys. It actually broke one guy's jaw! It then hopped away into the distant landscape.

The men couldn't drive their rented car, as their keys, passport and wallet were in the jacket, which was still on the kangaroo, so they had to walk back to civilization. A little while later, a pack of kangaroos was seen in the distance, one of them wearing a jacket."

"Montana 500 Endurance Run"

An excerpt from the Official Montana 500 Website says, "The Montana 500 Endurance Run was officially started in 1961 to give Model T owners a chance to get together and share their interest in Model T's. This is a timed event, perhaps unique in the world, as Montana is one of the last places to allow timed events on their public roads.

The 500 takes place in spectacular country, perhaps the most scenic in the lower 48 states. Huge flat green meadows surrounded by forested mountains and snow packed peaks. Nowadays to simplify logistics, the 500 is held out of a hub city. The first and second days are 200-mile days and the third day is a 100-mile day. Pit stops are made each 50 miles or so to gas up, get coffee, or eat lunch. The cars are flagged out at one-minute intervals and are soon jockeying for position and drafting on each other. The cars are then flagged in at each pit stop and are timed out by order of arrival. On the second day, cars are timed out in the reverse order of the 1st day's finish. The slowest car leaves 1st and the fastest car leaves last. This gives a chance for a slower car to draft on a faster car. The third day the cars are timed out by their order of finish on the previous two days. Fastest cars are first and the slowest cars are last."

Some 15 million Model T's were sold in the United States from 1908 to 1927, according to literature from the national club, before Ford changed to the more "user friendly" Model A. Model T prices were as low as $260, and Henry Ford called it the perfect car for the common man. Well tuned Model Ts will travel in the range of 50 MPH.

Decimation of bee populations in the United States is gradually assuming catastrophic proportions. The consequences for agriculture and the economy could be enormous.

Possible causes:
1. Widespread practice in agriculture of spraying wildflowers with herbicides and practicing monoculture.
2. Controversial use of genetic engineering in agriculture. (large-scale use of genetically modified plants in the US could be a factor)
3. Bees lose their sense of orientation so they can no longer find their way back to their hives.
4. Some speculate that a particular toxin, some unfamiliar agent is killing the bees.
5. Recent proliferation of electromagnetic waves from the 2.5 billion+ cell phone users around the world. (Disrupts intercellular communication within individual bees, many of them cannot find their way back to the hive.)

My husband and I went to Ireland in Spring of 2006. We visited a town in south west Cork called Baltimore. In the small town of Baltimore stands this beautiful beacon, a large white, milk bottle-shaped structure which is visible to all boats coming in to the port. It is built on top of a rocky promontory covered by smooth, mossy grass and grazing sheep. The views from the beacon on this clear day were spectacular. That's me at the bottom- the small black dot. It was windy too...

Trees not only improve our air quality and smog levels, they provide shade on hot summer days. I live on a busy street in Los Angeles and have noticed the lack of trees along my street. I though it would be great to transform the landscape and have trees running along my boulevard. I did a little bit of research and discovered Los Angeles has several programs for people interested in planting a tree.

I was in a house on the great plains of South Dakota. Miles and miles of rolling hills, canyons, and steep flat-topped buttes around me. Tumbleweeds, small brown shrubs, tall grasses that grow vertically out of the earth, and rabbits filled the emptiness. From the bathroom there was a view out onto vast open lands filled with mountains and huge puffy clouds in the distance. I accidentally ingested some liquid soap. As I was reading the fine print on the bottle to find out if it was toxic or not I saw a great big buffalo maybe even a bison, who must have been at least 2 tons come storming towards the house. It almost felt like a bull was rushing with blood in it's eyes. It crashed through the outside woodpaneled wall. I was starting to panic from ingesting the soap and the fine print kept getting smaller and smaller on the bottle and more difficult to read. Now I had worse things to worry about. I heard the buffalo snorting as I ran out the side door to the stables. I wanted to tell the ranch hands, "a buffalo crashed into the side of the house." Instead my throat started to feel constricted and I tried to yell "Buffalo!" but could only muster a small "yelp!" The ranch hands who were playing with a new puppy ignored me so I decided to clap my hands to get their attention. And then I woke up from my dream.

Ted Turner is best known as the founder of the cable television network CNN. Did you know he is the largest landowner in America? Turner owns vast expanses of ranchland across America. His geographic empire (approximately two million acres) is greater than the land areas of the two smallest states of Rhode Island and Delaware combined.

Turner is reintroducing many species to their native habitats, including wolves, bears, elk, fox, owl, woodpeckers, and trout. He has placed hundreds of thousands of acres in conservation easements that prohibit the use and development of the land forever. This basically means he has given up any future profit on the land and preserved it for generations to come. Turner’s intent is to manage his land in an economically sustainable and ecologically sensitive manner, while conserving native species.

The reintroduction of certain animals to the wild (mainly wolves) has created debate. Ranchers and other opponents consider the reintroduction of the wolf a threat to their herds. Wolves are also being introduced in other areas like the Yellowstone area and Idaho. A solution was created by a non-profit organization called “Defenders of Wildlife.” They created a fund to reimburse ranchers for livestock lost to wolves. This shifted the economic burden to the wolf proponents themselves.

Considering the sprawl that exists here in LA and elsewhere in the nation, parks and open spaces are so important for future generations. Conservation of vacant land is difficult since it is not profitable. However, individuals can play a small role in conservation. Lancaster and Palmdale, two towns about an hour northeast east of LA, have large undeveloped rural areas and acreage for sale. In the last ten years these towns have been growing at a very fast pace. It is beautiful high country with cactii, Joshua trees and native shrubs growing on flat lands and rolling hills.
I was researching land and prices and one can still find a good sized plot for $10,000. Deals get better the further away from town you go. I asked a seasoned agent what he thought about buying land out in the area and he said purchasing land out in the desert is not very profitable. He also said it would probably be years before you see a return on your investment.
So for those of you out there who want to make a quick profit this may not be a wise investment. For the conservationists out there, the purchase of such land, while being a long term investment, can also be a means to conserving the beauty of our nation. It's a great idea to buy land and plant trees that need minimal water or are drought tolerant such as the fruitless olive tree, the Sweet Bay, the African Sumac, the Afghan Pine and many more. This would help combat smog and carbon dioxide emissions from LA's sprawl.
