My husband and I went to Ireland in Spring of 2006. We visited a town in south west Cork called Baltimore. In the small town of Baltimore stands this beautiful beacon, a large white, milk bottle-shaped structure which is visible to all boats coming in to the port. It is built on top of a rocky promontory covered by smooth, mossy grass and grazing sheep. The views from the beacon on this clear day were spectacular. That's me at the bottom- the small black dot. It was windy too...






The invention of BARBED WIRE by Joseph Glidden in the 1870s made fencing the treeless plains possible, ending free-ranging droving of cattle.
